Endocrinology and Metabolism became an independent department in 2001 and was recognized as a key clinical specialty in Futian District in 2023. Currently, it comprises 28 medical workers, including 6 medical workers with senior professional titles and 10 doctors. The department accommodates 32 beds and comprises 3 sub-specialties, with the diabetic foot disease sub-specialty becoming a city leader. The annual outpatient visits reach nearly 30,000, with more than 1,200 patients discharged from the hospital. It is the president unit of the Endocrinology Branch of the Shenzhen Medical Doctor Association, the leading unit of the Futian District Diabetes Alliance, and a national diabetes health education management demonstration unit. It holds the deputy chairman unit of the Shenzhen Medical Association Diabetes Professional Committee, the deputy chairman unit of Working Committee on Osteoporosis and Bone Mineral Salt Diseases of the Shenzhen Medical Association, and the deputy chairman unit of Special Committee on Peripheral Nerves of the Shenzhen Medical Association.?
The department has 2 doctoral advisors, 3 master’s supervisors, 1 provincial talent, 2 district talents, and more than10 vice chairmen and members of the standing committee of national and provincial associations. It has presided over 6 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and more than 10 projects at provincial, municipal and district levels, earning 2 provincial science and technology awards and 12 patents. It has published more than 40 SCI papers. The department is equipped with 32 insulin pumps, dynamic blood glucose monitoring instruments, and visceral fat detectors, and has implemented new technologies and diagnostic and treatment methods, such as artificial dermal prosthesis for diabetic foot ulcers.?
Professor Chen Yanming is the academic leader of the Department of Endocrinology and the President of The Eighth Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University. With a 30-year clinical career, Professor Yanming Chen has extensive clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of endocrine and metabolic diseases, including diabetes, its complications, thyroid diseases (such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism), pituitary-adrenal diseases, obesity, fatty liver disease, and gonadal disorders. She possesses a high level of diagnostic and treatment capability for acute and complex endocrine and metabolic conditions. Her primary research areas include clinical and basic research on diabetes, its vascular complications, obesity, and stem cell therapy for diabetes. She is the Director of Diabetes Research Institute, the Weight Loss Center of Sun Yat-sen University, the Guangdong Key Laboratory of Diabetes Prevention and Control, and the Guangzhou Key Laboratory of Molecular Mechanism and Transformation of Obesity. Currently, she is a member of the Branch of Endocrinology and Metabolism Physicians of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the Vice Chairman of the Endocrine Branch of the Guangdong Medical Association, the Chairman of the Youth Committee, the Vice President of the Guangdong Medical Industry Association, the Chairman of the Endocrinology Management Branch, the Chairman of the Chronic Disease Prevention Committee of the Guangdong Association of Chinese Integrative Medicine, the Vice President of the Guangdong Female Medical Doctor Association, and the Chairman of the Diabetes Expert Committee. She has led more than 10 projects, including the key research and development initiatives from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and provincial key research projects. She has published more than 80 papers and obtained 8 national software patents. As the principal investigator, she has received the Guangdong Science and Technology Progress Award and the Guangdong Medical Science and Technology Award. She is also the editor-in-chief of “Hypertension and Diabetes” and other monographs.?
Professor Shen Yunfeng is the Director of the Department of Endocrinology. He is a member of the 100-person Program of Sun Yat-sen University (Class I clinical leading personnel), the Obesity Group and Insulin Resistance Group of the Diabetology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, the Deputy Chairman of the Primary Health Management Working Committee of the Chinese Aging Well Association, the Designate Chairman of the Diabetes Branch of Jiangxi Medical Association, and an editorial board member of the Chinese Journal of Diabetes Mellitus. In the past 5 years, he has led 3 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 key project of Provincial Natural Science Foundation, 1 key provincial research and development plan, and 1 major project of national key research and development plan. He has also been awarded the Third Prize of the Provincial Natural Science Award and Science and Technology Progress Award, has published 19 SCI papers as the first or corresponding author (including 2 SCI papers in Zone 1 and 7 SCI papers in Zone 2), obtained 1 invention patent and 5 utility patents, participated in compiling 5 clinical guidelines or expert consensuses, and contributed to the compilation of four works.?
